Look over your potential apartment like a drill sergeant on inspection, because if you don't catch what's wrong now, chances are you might end up paying for it later when you move out. Literally, in most cases.
Parking and Other Considerations
When you look at a place to rent you're going to have to consider more than just the house or apartment itself. No matter how beautiful the interior or how amazing the location, there are questions that need answered. Questions like, where are you going to park your car? Where is the nearest public transportation? Where is the nearest grocery store? A lot of times people can get overwhelmed by finding their perfect place, and they forget to think about their more sundry needs until after they've signed the lease. Where you live is a package deal and you need to keep all aspects of it firmly in mind.
You Pay More Than The Rent
When you're renting a place it all seems pretty simple and straightforward; pay the rent on time and go about your day. But there's more to it than that, and you need to carefully read over your contract to find out what all of your costs really are. For instance, is there an application fee that you need to pay just to try and become a renter? What utilities are you responsible for, and which ones are covered by your landlord? What is your security deposit, and is there a pet deposit (if you have a pet)? What are the costs when you move out? How much does it cost to leave early, if such becomes necessary?
These are all things that you, as the renter, should take a careful look at before you decide to sign the lease and move into a place. Because the rent is never the extent of what you're paying. That's why it should only be about 1/4 of your income, or thereabouts in order to make sure that you can cover all of your other necessary expenses and bills, while saving a little against future needs.
Roommates
This last category is simple and straightforward; if you're going to have roommates, get trustworthy and reliable ones. Do they have jobs? Do they have a good credit history? Do they have savings? Are they agreeable to live with? This is all very important.
