The Importance of Packing Materials
Tape and packing paper are the staples when packing dishes. One cannot use thin masking tape, but rather thick packing tape is required. A strong and wide tape will be best in this type of packing. Most prefer to use newspapers to wrap their dishes in; while white packing paper is the best option, newspaper is easy to get a hold of. Rather than just placing folded newspapers in a box, crumble the papers, as it will provide greater protection. There needs to be a thick bed of paper at the bottom of the box. Usually, a 4-5 inch layer of crumbled papers will help absorb the shock. After the items are packed, it is also important to put at least 3-4 additional inches of paper on the top. This is also a great place to put non-breakable dishes, like ice trays or plastic storage containers. This is the most important thing in packing a box with dishware, the protective paper. Because newspaper is so inexpensive, the more used is definitely better.
Packing The Goods
After the box is ready it is time to wrap the dishes. This would be a great project to get the whole family, including the children, involved in. The dishes should each be wrapped individually. One sheet of paper is sufficient unless the glass is especially fragile, like crystal. If there are any noises when the box is picked up, they are not sufficiently wrapped. Any clunking noises are a sure sign for trouble. If there are noises, simply add more crumbled paper until the box is firmly packed and silent. The goal is to not have the dishes be able to move around. When the dishes move around, they can easily bump into each other and cause breakage. Mix the boxes and put breakable items in with non-breakable. Rather than packing an entire box full of heavy plates, mix it up with some plastics to make it less heavy and more durable. Boxes that are over packed are not only in danger of busting, but they can also be heavy to lift.
Packing, while a mundane task; is a necessary evil. After the boxes have been loaded, make sure to mark each box and what contents are inside. When it comes time to unpack all the items, knowing exactly what is in each box will help. Make sure to mark which boxes are fragile. Not everyone will know that grandma’s old dishes, are china and worth a fortune. Assume nothing; make sure every box is labeled properly for the moving company or people helping.
