10 Ways People Overspend When Moving

Here is Part 2 of our feature piece on ways people overspend on moving. In case you missed Part 1, catch it here!

Saving Tip 5: Cleanliness Pays

If you are moving from an apartment you should make sure of your responsibility regarding the move-out condition of the premises. Often these conditions are included in your lease, but if they are not, make sure you get this information in writing, so there will not be any misunderstanding regarding your security deposit. Many apartment dwellers forfeit their security deposits because they are sure about all of their responsibilities.

Saving Tip 6: Timing is everything

Consider moving in months other than June or July. These are the busiest times to move and also the most costly. If you can, try to move in the fall or winter. You should also try moving during the week, as opposed to the weekend. Moving companies have less of a demand during the week, so if you go that route you can probably get a better deal. You might be able to get a discount if you are flexible enough to work around the movers schedule too. If the company that you hire already has a job in the area on the day of your move they may be open to negotiation.

Saving Tip 7: Get Referrals

Do you have a friend who knows a friend who has a cousin, who moved recently? If so, find out if the company offers any kind of a referral incentive.

Saving Tip 8: Packing Solutions

If using professional movers offer to box and pack yourself. You might be able to save money by getting some boxes from your local grocery or department store. Try to determine how many boxes you will need. Make sure you have all the boxes and packing material that you need to get started. Remember, packing takes a considerable amount of time, so you should plan accordingly.

Saving Tip 9: Don't Lose Time

Time lost from work should be avoided by carefully planning your move around your work schedule. Don't underestimate the amount of time moving and packing will cost you.

Saving Tip 10: Avoid Scams

Don't fall for anyone offering you a deal that's too good to be true. Do some research and find out all you can before you trust anyone with your possessions.
