Welcome to Part 2 of our feature piece on introducing yourself to your neighbors. In case you missed Part 1, catch it here!
Look for small details that tell you a neighbor is perfect for meeting, such as a garden lover like yourself, or a car-pooler with a car full of kids. If you love gardening, or have a child with a ride-to-school need, there's the perfect opening. Remember, you're the new guy, so don't appear to be stalking anyone. Introducing yourself to a new neighbor will be easier with someone else. Unless you moved alone, you should be able to introduce yourself and your significant other together. This should make the whole process easier.
If you identify yourself as an older person without children, you could still introduce yourself to the parents as someone that will take care to watch out for their children. Keep in mind that news stories have people scared to death of threats to their children. It is a good idea to set neighbors at ease immediately to your presence in the neighbor. They are as anxious as you to find out you are a good, dependable person. As an older person, you may find an interesting elderly couple to meet. Maybe you have elderly parents, and can easily relate to your new older neighbors.
Life is busy for all of us, and even Nationwide Relocation Services knows that the situation you find yourself in when moving in can be overwhelming. With still lots to do, getting to know the neighborhood is just a big part of getting around for everyday living. One way to meet a new neighbor, and probably the easiest is to simply ask the way to the store, the bank or where is the biggest mall? Explain how you have a teen-age daughter, and everything must wait until she has found the most popular place to hang-out.
You moved out of one neighborhood and into this new one. You are already half-way through the biggest job you will ever have. So don't let it be a stressful event. Have coffee, invite someone over that you've had the chance to wave at, or someone that waved at you. Once that initial introduction is completed, you won't have a worry about getting to know the neighbors or the neighborhood. All the rest falls into place. Now, all you need to do, is relax, take your time and unpack. Be ready for an onslaught of introductions, and be open to all the help that your new neighbors will offer. Afterall, it's your move.
