Go Through Your House with a Fine-Tooth Comb
Make a tour of your house as if you are seeing it for the very first time and need to describe it to someone. If this sounds silly, it really isn't. You probably have already hired an inspector who conducted his own tour of your house prior to you going to closing, however, you want to look at from the perspective of wanting to keep it in the best shape possible. This means proper insurance coverage, energy efficiency and everything else under the sun.
Discovering the Services that Serve You Well
The following ideas can be implemented all at once or whenever you feel there is a need. We do suggest, however, that when deciding you take into consideration all factors such as replacement cost versus a service contract.
- Exterior and interior pest control. This is a service that you contract for by the month or year. Prices generally vary according to the contract. You may want to try it when you first move in as a precautionary service, in case there is an infestation brewing.
- Power company energy efficiency consultation. This is typically offered by the local power company and is a free service. There is an additional bonus and that is they offer some discounts in the way of rebates if you change windows, doors, insulation and so on.
- Appliance service and home maintenance contract. When buying a house with appliances as part of the package it really is a good idea to get a service maintenance contract. Even if the machines are only a couple of years old you have no idea of how hard the previous owners were on them or whether they were maintained properly after they were purchased.
If you are a handy person and can oversee your own lawn, pool and home repairs, that's great. The services mentioned above, though, may be beyond what you are capable of and very worthwhile to look into. Let us know if we missed anything at Twitter @nationwiderelo.
