How to Prepare Your Washing Machine for Moving

There are varying degrees of moving services that moving companies offer, from as little as just moving the packed boxes and furniture from one place to another, to a complete full service that includes dismantling, wrapping, packing, loading and assembly and installation upon unloading at your new place. Many opt for the regular service and prepare the contents of their house on their own.


Preparation Done Properly Protects Your Possessions
It goes without saying that if you do things properly from day one, there will be little regret later on. When preparing appliances for your move, such as a washing machine, you should review these steps to ensure it's done right.

• Shut off the hot and cold water valves and run on warm rinse for 30 seconds or so to make sure that the water has drained out from the hose.
• Set your washing machine on spin so all of the extra water is drained out. Failure to do this can result in water damages if the machine gets tipped in transit.
• At this point you can unplug the electric cord and tape it to the back of the machine with electrical or packing tape.
• You then want to unhook the drain hose. This can also be taped to the back of the washer.
• Now it's time to disconnect the water lines at the source and at the back of the washing machine. Wipe down and cover the metal ends so as not to scratch the interior of your machine. Place the lines inside the appliance.
• Be sure not to leave the four leveling discs behind that balance your machine for optimum efficiency. Without these levels your machine can be unbalanced and move when running a load of clothes on spin cycle.

Protecting the Exterior
If you are hiring a mover they will be sure to cover the machine with specially padded blankets so that the exterior does not get scratched. You don't want a brand new stainless steel or pristine white appliance to suffer damages. Additionally, a bungee cord will secure the door. Now your washing machine is all packed up and ready to move. When you arrive you want to make sure to attach your water lines and hoses properly.
