Building Good Habits: Creating a Homework Space in Your New Home – Part Two

Be sure to read part of Building Good Habits: Creating a Homework Space in Your New Home to learn how to make homework time easier for everyone.

Clearing the Clutter
The next step is to give your child a nice clean space to worth with. Removing any papers and clutter will help your child to focus on their own work. Some children will make a toy out of anything. To ensure that they are spending the time they need to on their homework, you should remove anything that can become a distraction. While you want to clear out any unnecessary clutter, you still want to keep it inviting. You may want to have your child draw some pictures or decorate their area to give it a little flare!

Get Supplies Ready
Don't let your child scrummage around for the supplies they need. Depending on their age, there are common school supplies that you can get ahead of time that will help your child. Some of these supplies include:
  • Pens
  • Glue
  • Ruler
  • Paper
  • Erasers
  • Pencils
  • Scissors
  • Crayons
  • Markers
  • Note cards
  • Colored pencils
  • Grips for pens or pencils
You can put them together in a bin or box that is easily accessible to your child. When it is time for homework, you can simply get the box out and place it beside them.

Give Them Peace and Quiet
Homework time should be a quiet time for everyone in your house. This doesn't mean that it has to be a library in your house, but that all loud noises should be turned off or go into a different area of your home. For instance, if you get a phone call, it would a good idea to go into a different room so that your child isn't distracted by your conversation. You should also turn off any television or radio that is nearby. Eliminating the loud noises will help your child concentrate better, and hopefully they can finish their homework quicker.

Spend Some Time with Them
It is always a good idea to be available to help your child with their homework, but it is also helpful to actually sit with them. Even if your child says they can do it on their own, you can ask them to explain it to you because you are confused. This is a good way to see if your child is comprehending the lessons. Spending a little time with them each night will also make it easier for you to understand what they are working on. You won't have to spend time reviewing past lessons in order to explain the current lesson if you go through it each night with your child.

Once you get into a routine with their homework, you will be surprised at how much easier it will be for you and your child.
