Gardening Ideas
When you are planning your garden, try to keep these things in mind to be the most resourceful with your water.

  • When planting new plants, try to do so when the weather is cooler and rains more often; this will give your plants the best chance to grow.
  • Use some organic mulch around your plants to help them retain more moisture.
  • When mowing your lawn, you can change the setting on the lawn mower to a high setting because the taller roots will provide shade and hold more moisture.
  • Put a rain sensor on your irrigation controller; this way your sprinklers won't start when it is raining.
  • Group your plants by the amount of water they all need and try to strategically place them in areas that will recieve more or less shade depending on their needs.
  • Leave the lower branches on some of your trees and shrubs intact. The leaves dand branches will help keep the area cooler and will prevent water from evaporating as quickly.
  • Talk to someone at your local nursery to determine which plants will be best in your area. You should also talk to them about the proper amount of water that should be used. Very often, plants will die because they are over-watered not under-watered.
Two Birds, One Stone
Here are some ways you can water your lawn while doing other tasks as well:

  • On a hot summer day, all kids want to do is run around in the water. An easy and quick way to get your kids playing in the water and water your lawn at the same time is to place a sprinkler in an area that needs water.
  • On the weekend, when you want to wash your car move your car onto the lawn and wash your car on the lawn. As you wash your car, the water will run off and water your lawn at the same time.
  • When it comes time to wash your pet, do so on the lawn. You can also try to wash your dog in an area that may need some extra water. Your dog and your lawn will appreciate the water.
